When I read the first fashion Design Challenge was for a men's pirate outfit, I noticed that the world was filled with a lot of 'fancy dress' style outfits for captains, but there were not all that many designs for the crew. So I decided to go with something for the crew. I thought the basic pirate red and white striped shirt would be cute, and to set it off from being just a standard t-shirt, I decided to give it a really nice brown leather vest and make a matching pair of brown leather shorts. I wanted to use a template that hadn't been used for a pirate outfit yet. My first choice was a 'men's puffy vest' but unfortunately the mapping on the chest made it impossible to do nice looking stripes. After trying many different designs, I switched to using the 'men jacket' but I did not want to have long sleeves. The cuffs at the end also copy form the bottom of the jacket, which was the bottom of the brown vest on my design. The finshed version was nice but not quite the effect I wanted. So I eventually settled on a t-shirt as the template to use, as the mapping was perfect for creating the look I wanted to achieve. I worked with different looks, playing around with a sash or a dagger or trying different combinations of various pirate items, but in the end, the red shirt, vest, and rope over the shoulder looked the best.

I did get to use a different template for the bottoms. I decided on the 'surfer shorts' as a template. It appears to be something that hadn't been used before for a pirate outfit and somewhat similar to what pirates might have worn. I went with the basic brown trowsers with buckles at the leggings. I extended the shirt onto the shorts to make it look longer. Then I wrapped around a red sash, tied it off, and tucked in an old fashioned pistol. Then I added a belt with buckle. Then I added a drinking gourd to the side to finish off the look.
