The French phrase "Haute Couture" translated directly into english means "High Fashion". This week, fashion doesn't get any higher than the floating islands of Saja. I set out this week by looking at three of my biggest influences in fashion: Jean-Paul Gaultier, John Galliano and Jade DeVangelis. High Fashion in Saja meant to me that it needed an edgy, aeronautical look, that she would be a quasi "Interplanet Janet" if you will. So I set out to do something with a lot of visual interest and I interpreted it in rich tones and textures and brought in a romantic touch influenced by the light and wistful feel of Saja. I wanted to create an ensemble that would be right at home flying on the backs of the dragons seen on the Coming Soon signs.
This week, I went on a photo field trip. I wanted to visit Saja and take in all of it's wonders, from Poyoa Mill to Talamini Gardens and the floating houses. I knew that everyone has seen Saja in so many different ways, from looking at the gravity defying flora to visiting it's misty beaches below. I decided to look at Saja from a new angle, so I took a lot of pictures from uncommon angles, then integrated them into my design. From those photos and my imagination, I have created a confident Sajan Explorer and her ensemble encompasses elements from the wonderous place that it is. Saja's blooming flowers photographed from above are the buttons on the long frock coat and thigh-high boots that keep my explorer warm in flight. Pieces of the house roofs are the button accents on the coat and they also decorate the edges of the sleeves. The curving design under the Sajan Maps decorate the sleeves of the coat. The rich red-brown, teal and golden hues come from different areas of Saja itself.
So my design this week is a long, texturized, red-brown leather frock coat that covers a teal leather sheath dress. I enhanced the long romantic lines of the coat by using corset-type lacing in the back and gave it more flare by adding chain closures in the front. To keep her legs warm and protected from the elements, I have made her thigh-high lace up leather boots with the tops turned down. The ensemble is finished off by a windmill pendant around her neck, and a Pumpkin-colored Spike hairstyle. My design is comfortable, yet it keeps the innovative and edgy spirit of Haute Couture.
